Basket Fish (ザル魚君 Zaruzakana-kun) is a character from Legend of Mana and Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal. A 5-year-old anthropomorphic fish, Basket Fish is a nouveau-riche who has rapidly risen in wealth and social status owing to his acquisition of a Jumi core of sapphire that is known as the "Blue Eye". Extremely pompous and condescending towards everyone he encounters as a result, he is therefore viewed with much disdain, especially Revanshe, a dancer whom he carries a torch for.
Profile[]
Drowned Dreams[]
Basket Fish arrives at the hotel, promptly calling the Hero/Heroine a beggar right in the entrance. He rents the entire hall for himself, and goes in a blink to see Revanshe. Later in the event, he is asked by Thoma and Inspector Boyd to show the Blue Eye. Reluctant at first, he quickly gives in when Revanshe shows interest in it too. By the time the jewel flashback ends, Inspector Boyd comes from the main hall asking about the Blue Eye. Confused, Thoma asks him had him not seen the flashback just now. Inspector Boyd instantly enrages, as the jewel is long gone. Sandra was disguised as him and took the oportunity to steal the jewel.
Past the robbery of the Blue Eye, Basket Fish is now poor and needs to work on the hotel, right alongside Revanshe, probably much to her disdain.
Personality[]
Legend of Mana[]
Having inherited an immense fortune at an unstated point of time before the events of Legend of Mana, Basket Fish is not particularly modest and reserved about the fact; he instead chooses to adopt an attitude that is repugnant snobbish and condescending, blatantly demeaning those who are of inferior financial statuses. This is true in Drowned Dreams, where he is observed to be pointedly rude and vulgar to everyone he interacts with him, going so far as to refer to the Hero/Heroine as a "beggar".
Further adding on to Basket Fish's deprecating character is the fact that he is one who is consumed by lust, a fact that sees him shamelessly hounding Revanshe with revolting declarations of his infatuation with her, despite her repeated protests against his crude advances.
Legend of Mana: The Teardrop Crystal[]
Basket Fish acts similarly to his ingame counterpart: a demeaning, condescending attitude towards others. However, this personality is implied to be a front as prior to the events of Sapphire, Basket Fish has a nice and kind-hearted personality, offering Sappho to stay in his home and enjoying the company of the Jumi. After Sappho entrusts his core, the Blue Eye to Basket Fish, Basket Fish appears saddened over reminiscing of Sappho, seeing him as an important person he met. As likely to prevent others from knowing that his gem is a Jumi's core, Basket Fish tries hard to push others away from getting close to him.
While Basket Fish still shares one-sided infatuation towards Revanshe, the promise he made to Sappho is more important to him that he refuses 'her' request to give the Blue Eye to 'her'. After losing the Blue Eye to Sandra, Basket Fish weakly apologizes for failing on his promise to keep his friend's core safe.
