Dudbears (アナグマ Anaguma) are a recurring race of creatures in the Mana series, first appearing in Legend of Mana.
Profile[]
Appearance[]
The dudbear is a humanoid that resembles a fusion of a rodent and a brown bear with the arms and hands of a human. They are furry bipedal beings with rounded ears and long muzzles who typically wear green clothing and large shoes.
Personality[]
Simple-minded, naive and innocent to a fault, the Dudbears collectively present a personality that is starkly gullible and tractable, as they are easily coerced into submitting to figures possessing more power than they do unquestioningly. This fact alone has resulted in the Dudbears being brutally exploited, the main culprit perpetuating this crime being Roger, who subjects them to backbreaking menial labour in the Ulkan Mines under the twisted motto of "salvation through labour".
The malleability of the Dudbears is further taken towards the extremes through their being coerced into joining Roger in his mentally unsound worship of his pet dog Putty, where their behaviour is specially modulated to glorify it. This fact can be observed in the conclusion of Where's Putty?, where, on command, the Dudbears express "relief" and "joy" after Putty is found.
Appearances[]
Sword of Mana[]
Legend of Mana[]
Dudbears slave for Roger's Diggers. Initially leading simple, unperturbed lives as laborers for Roger's mining business, the Dudbears are later forced to join the cult that he constructs around his pet dog Putty.
Sirens and Gilbert's Arc[]
Faeries' Light[]
A couple of Dudbears roam around Lumina, specially around the tavern. The Hero/Heroine may offer lamps for them to buy, but first they must convince the Dudbears to buy them. After Gilbert leaves, Monique goes back to her shop, and to her surprise, the Dudbears come to praise her work, much to her delight.
Diddle and Capella's Arc[]
Diddle Kidnapped!?[]
Roger and the cult have invaded the now abandoned St. Church of Mana, expanding his plans of heading to The White Forest. After that, the Hero/Heroine witnesses a Dudbear kidnapping Diddle at the Park of Mana Angel in Domina. Roger then plans to dig up a hole in The White Forest with Diddle as an extra soldier, but the Dudbears inform him that a vicious monster is at the area. They promptly run away from there, leaving behind Diddle and Capella, and the Hero/Heroine to defeat the monster.
